I'm playing with my first char on the ladder, a sorc which just had gotten to 40. I just had gotten the runes for the Insight runeword. What would be the best polearm to attach it to, and what's the best place to hunt for it?

Heh, I think I'm too early for an ethereal cryptic axe as of yet, I've just started nightmare actually. The Bill (exceptional voulge) actually fits perfectly. Thanks for suggesting that.
Any idea which place to grind it on? I'm not too keen with the item level locations and such. Should I also use Larzuk's socket reward for this? I assumed it would be better saving that reward for unique items that I pick up in the future. :)

Which is the best?
Many will answer with ethereal colossus voulge. Now that requires 200 str to equip. I say any your merc can equip works. It's the Meditation aura you're after, remember?

The best in my research is the Great Poleaxe, followed by the Giant Thresher, Thresher, Cryptic Axe, and lastly the Colossus Voulge.
I found these stats based on their base attack speed, reach, and average damage.

As far as where to find... I've had good luck finding them running Pits. Generally any level 81+ area will have access to all of them.
Unfortunately the easiest to hardest to find is the above in reverse order. IMO a eth Colossus Voulge is the best starter for high damage, plus if you feel like blowing your socket quest on it, it will get 4 sockets.
Remember when hunting for sockets to lower your magic find, otherwise it will have a greater chance of being magical or higher.|||

On ladder, you can trade for a low Insight for your merc for pgems. I wouldnt blow a socket quest on it.
You cant use an Elite one at L40, so whatever Exceptional one you can get your hands on will work fine.
Eventually of course you want an eth elite polearm....all of them do the same DPS on a naked merc, but you probably want the fastest ones (Thresher or Giant Thresher) so that your merc doesnt get interrupted as much.|||I like how easy it is to get the runes for Insight, but the 4 socket polearms are much harder to come by it seems. I found a partizan (level 25 polearm) in nightmare Travincal.
