So Respec isn't infinite?

Got to lvl 22, had a buddy say he lets do some norm baal runs.
Buddy rushed me to act 5, then proceeded to respec to 20 points into Amp Damage for quicker runs (altho probably not even needed) The remaining 3 points into bone shield.
Put all my stats into Vitality for the power leveling.
Buddy does about 5 runs then has to log.
I go back to act 1 to respec.
Unable to respec, awesome. Thanks for the warning blizzard. I have a lvl 22 useless toon now, YAY.|||The way the respec system was implemented was clearly defined in the patch notes. You get 1 respec per difficulty after completing the Den of Evil quest. Once Akara's respec is used it cannot be used again in that difficulty. If you need more than 3 you have to collect the new essence items that are dropped by the act bosses in Hell difficulty. When put in the horadric cube they become a token of absolution that offers a free respec. So yes, technically there are infinite respecs available.
Make sure you read up on this stuff before you start assuming things. Blizzard does not have a fix for carelessness.
EDIT:
I actually have to correct myself. The patch notes did not specifically explain the essences and how they are used, they only gave a clue that you had to defeat the bosses in Hell to obtain a new mysterious item. Still though, the mystery of the essences was figured out very quick and since then has spread throughout the community.|||So after not playing a game for easily 5+ years I'm supposed to read community news in order to understand a patch? Flawed logic is flawed.
Not to even mention the search I did conduct once I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't let me respec. It took easily 30 min on Google searching every outdated forum possible.
It all honesty tho I am glad this happened, because necro was a pretty awful class and all available information to me, is a pretty worthless class in the game. Time to level my Sorc or barb, havent decided yet. =)|||

No you are supposed to read the patch notes. If you did not hit the button labeled "Read Patch Notes" after the update check the patch.txt file in your D2/LoD install folder. Under the "Specific changes/improvements" section of patch 1.13 you'll find this:
- Respecialization is now possible! Completing the 'Den of Evil' quest
will now additionally reward 1 free respec which can be saved. Players
who have already completed this quest should receive 1 free respec in
Hell difficulty.

If you have to google for 30 minutes to find out how respecs worked, it's no wonder a necro seems awful to you after all available information was used.
The nec may not be THE fastest, but it sure as hell isn't weak. Corpse explosion even got a buff ffs. Dealing 60-100% +1.13buff of monster life in a radius the size of the screen+amplify damage. 50ish summons, with about level 40 bonespear+spirit+bone wall and prison for things like say....uber meph yes please. (note damage does not increase with added players Also note that thanks to the "dupe fix" a few years ago prison+lower resistance+fire sorc is a bit tricky).|||Beginning of this Ladder, friends make a sorceress to speed to Hell Difficulty. They zoom to Act 1 Hell in the first week. Then I kill Hell Baal a week after with nothing but blues while I see games like "Nd Tal Rasha's" or "Ist 4 Tal Armor."
Kramuti's right. They don't have great mobility, but there isn't a class I know better to lend fire support, if not tank for any other character than a Summon Necromancer with 1 point in all his curses. And if there's no one he can tank for, he can solo with ease.
But really, if it's not your style, I can understand. Hammerdins, Sorcs and WW Barbs are characters I don't play. Some classes just don't have appeal.
