I'm new and confused about this item.

Hello. I'm new at Diablo 2 and transmuted an amulet called "Vulpine Amulet" it states that 9% of damage taken goes to mana. Does this mean that 9% of the damage I take will be subtracted from my mana instead of my health or that 9% of damage I take will be added to my mana?|||The latter. You take full damage but then you gain mana equal to 9% of that damage afterwards. See the description of the Vulpine prefix on the Arreat Summit at http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/magic/pre.shtml|||The following is quoted from the link that Mouseypounds gave you:
Vulpine 7-12% (varies) Damage taken Goes to Mana
Amulets(9), Orbs(9), Shields(9), Staves(9)
Items of Vulpine regenerate mana based on how much damage you take. You will only receive mana back when you are damaged, so if you are not being hit a lot, an item that regenerates mana faster, or a Triumphant Item that gives +1 to Mana after each kill might be more valuable.
Example: If an item provides you with a 10% Damage taken Goes to Mana modifier, and you receive 40 damage, you will gain 10% * 40 = 4 mana.
Will you gain mana when your Minions or Hirelings are damaged?
No, Minions or Hirelings do not factor in.|||Cool, thanks for clearing that up guys. Since I'm leveling as a hybridmancer I'm not sure how useful that'll be, but I'll try it out and see. Thanks again.
