BTW, I find Tower Shields and their variations everywhere, especially on difficulty levels above Normal. However, since I play an Amazon archer (Bowazon) I don't bother picking them up. ;P|||I know the variations can have 4 sockets, i wanted a 3 socketed one for a runeword i'm planning to make.|||

I apologize if I insulted your knowledge of the game. I was just trying to help.
Q u o t e:
Just take a Tower Shield or Pavise to Larzuk in Harrogath, Act V, any difficulty level (if you haven't done this already). If you're in Nightmare difficulty your character should be a high enough level that he'll put the maximum number of 3 Sockets in the Shield.
JustinDarkwater
Your other option is to search Normal or Nightmare difficulty until you find a Tower Shield with exactly 3 Sockets.
Q u o t e:

Rmcin329
I assumed this, since Gems, Jewels and Runes do not require a specific number of Sockets or order of insertion to gain their effects. I only mentioned the Aegis as a reminder that Larzuk will put 4 Sockets on it, ruining your ability to create your Runeword.|||Rmcin329,
I just found a Superior Tower Shield with 3 Sockets. If you're still looking and you want it, let me know in this thread. I check the forums 2 to 4 times a day, so if you want it let me know and maybe we can schedule a game where I can give it to you.
You can see it here:
http://i1008.pho
1 Tal Rune + 1 Amn Rune + 1 Perfect Ruby + Normal Shield = Socketed Shield of same type
Just in case you'd want to save your socket quests for set or unique items. At the moment, however, it looks like Justin has the solution. :)|||

Uh aren't you on useast? i play on uswest as it states right next to my name here on the forums. In any case yes i am still looking for one, but if i dont' find one by the time i finish getting the runes together i will probably burn normal difficulty socket quest.
As for the recipe Breywood mentioned.......That is an interesting thought i forogot about that one when scrolling recipe list. But i'm already short on perfect rubys as is, we'll just have to wait and see once i'm closer to having all of the runes. Currently i've got 1 of the Ko runes, a lum, a lem, 2 lo ones and a few other lower ones. Probably will take me some time to get the rest together as i'm only killing nightmare countess once per game, not running her several times a day.
EDIT
completly forgot to mention, the runeword i'm making is Sanctuary.|||

Um... Sorry! My bad. I must have been thinking of muling between different accounts. I forgot those accounts must be on the same Realm.

Just remember:
Q u o t e:
1 Tal Rune + 1 Amn Rune + 1 Perfect Ruby + Normal Shield = Socketed Shield of same type
The number of sockets will vary. The item must be normal and unsocketed. Low-quality items and superior items do not work. The item gets 1-4 sockets, randomly. However, the number of sockets is then restricted by the maximum number of sockets that base item with that ilvl can have. For example, if you have an item that can only have 2 sockets, there's a 5/6 chance of getting 2 sockets and a 1/6 chance of getting 1 socket.
from D2:LOD Horadric Cube Document ver. 1.10.09
In any case, good luck with whatever you decide to do. And happy hunting!

I didn't know Larzuk would socket Set or Uniques. It seems I remember trying it in 1.12 (and earlier), but he would not socket them. Hmm... perhaps I should try it again. However, he will socket Superior quality items.|||Well i'm still collecting the runes i need(and might be for some time even) but i got around to thinking, what ilvl does a tower shield need to get 3 sockets from larzuks quest? Also i'm not well informed on how to tell how high the ilvl of something is, i just know the higher the difficulty the better in general. In any case what i'm getting at is, can i just buy a blank white tower shield in say act 4 nightmare, then burn my normal socket quest on it and get 3 sockets? Or do i need to go look for a white tower shield as a drop somewhere?(and if i do need to, then where would be nice to know)
Anyways thanks for help in advance.|||

It's not the item level you need to be concerned with. It's your character level. The higher your character level is, the better chance you have of Laruk putting the maximum number of sockets in your Shield. Any Normal (white text) Tower Shield will do. So will a Superior Tower Shield. And yes, if you're not having any luck finding one, you can buy one and have it socketed.
You could also use the Pavise, which as you know, is the upgraded version of the Tower Shield. The Pavise, however, requires a Strength of 133 to equip.
I don't know the exact level your character needs to be to get the maximum number of sockets, but I know I'm usually between clvl 70 - 80 when I use my first Larzuk quest.
For example:
I wanted a Harmony Blade Bow for my MA Bowazon. I recently found a Blade Bow at clvl 79, took it to Larzuk in Normal difficulty and he put the maximum 4 sockets in it. The next game I was lucky enough to find the only Rune I was missing; the Ko Rune. I now have my Harmony Blade Bow.
____________
Edit:
BTW, the Tower Shield (max 3 sockets) is a Normal item. You should find them all over Normal difficulty. The Pavise (max 3 sockets) is the Exceptional version of the Tower Shield and you should start finding them in Nightmare difficulty. They're a little more rare to find. The Aegis (max 4 sockets) is the Elite version of the Tower Shield and you shouldn't start finding them until Hell difficulty (although in one game, I did find a Magical Dusk Shroud in Nightmare difficulty). They're the most rare to find.|||

Well i've only seen a very few tower shields in drops, and none of them have had any sockets. Haven't seen a single pavise drop yet, or even any in shops. Just got to act V nightmare.|||

Very few? All you need is one. When you find it, hang on to it. As long as it's not low-quality (Cracked, Damaged, etc). When your character is a high enough level, take it to Larzuk.
In the ten years I've been playing D2 there's something I've noticed. It may just be me, because different players have different experiences. But, when I play my Bowazon, it seems I find all kinds of items for other character types (like all the Tower Shields I'm finding). When I play my Paladin Mule, he seems to find all the bows. Although, when my Bowazon started hitting higher levels, she did begin finding some nicer items. I've just recently hit level 80 and I'm still looking for the rest of the equipment I'd like my character to have. It just takes patience and a lot of hours playing the game.
Something you may have already noticed is that as your character reaches higher levels, the merchants will begin to carry higher level/quality items. Even in Act I, Normal difficulty.
Tip: No matter what difficulty mode your playing on, if you visit a merchant in any Act and they don't have what you're looking for, waypoint to another Act and check the merchant(s) there.|||

You are correct, Rmcin329. My apologies! It's been a long time since I've checked the documents and couldn't find it this time, to confirm this. Thank you for setting me straight.
I've never had a problem getting the maximum sockets from Larzuk, but then I never socket Normal items. I always socket Exceptional or Elite items depending on the Attribute requirements (whether I can equip it or not).
Since ilvl is the contributing factor then, your chances of getting the maximum number of sockets on a Tower Shield may be as good as using the socket formula, if you have the Runes to spare.
I don't remember if you mentioned your character type, but if you're playing a Paladin, you may want to wait until you find (or can buy) a Pavise (assuming you have the Strength). Especially since the Defense and Smite Damage is more than triple that of the Tower Shield.
According to the link you posted, Arreat Summit says your best chances for maximum sockets is with an ilvl greater than 40. Unfortunately, I've never seen any documentation on the exact levels of items in Diablo II. I only know that for my Bowazon, Larzuk's quest always gets me the maximum 6 sockets on Gothic Bows (Exceptional Long War Bow) and Hydra Bows (Elite). And if they're Superior, the Superior attribute is retained. In the same way, if you used a Cracked item (no one should want to do that), the Cracked attribute would be retained.
Anyway, good luck in finding your Shield and getting it socketed. I'm sorry we're not on the same Realm. Knowing you're still looking for one pains me even more that I had to sell that 3-socketed Tower Shield I found for you last week.
Justin Darkwater|||nah i can't spare the runes, i'm upgrading all of them to build up to what i still need to make the runeword. Great now the magic question is, where to look for a ilvl 40 or better tower shield? -.-
EDIT
Googling a bit i found this http://www.extreme-g
Thought i'd post it in case anyone was interested. Gives some interesting details about ilvls.
Also feeling like an idiot afterwards.....I noticed the sticky at the top of this page about sockets. If i'm understanding his chart right, i can use pretty much any white tower shield and get 3 sockets, if i'm understanding his chart correctly. Too bad every single gambled one is Magic and every single one in the shops are too. Oh well i'll find a blank one eventually and burn a socket quest on it, seems how i can't really spare the runes.
FURTHER EDIT
Just got my 2nd Ko rune, which dropped in act V nightmare(first dropped some time back in act 2 nightmare). Now i just need the shield and a Mal rune.|||Update! On one countess run earlier today i found the runes i needed to finish creating a 3rd Ko rune now. Also on a later countess run i found a white tower shield! Successfully used my normal difficulty socket quest to get 3 sockets in it. Now i just need to dig up enough runes to cube up a Mal. Anyways, thanks for your help everyone.|||

Try Countess runs and Chaos Sanctuary in Nightmare difficulty. I've found a few Mals there. Even if you don't, you should find some decent mid-level Runes for upgrading.
