If you play Closed Battle.Net your toons are saved on Blizzard's server:
- When you start a new character you have ten days to play the character for two hours within a 48 hour period. When you login you will see the name of your character. Under the name of your toon you will see, in red text, "Expires in X days" until you meet the requirements.
- Once you've met the requirements, your toon will last 90 days, meaning you only have to be in-game with that toon, for any length of time, once every 90 days. You will no longer see the "Expires..."
message. - If you haven't played your toon for about a month you will start seeing the "Expires..."
message again (ex. "Expires in 46 days") giving you time to bring your toon in-game again and reset the time for another 90 days. - When Blizzard resets the Ladder all Ladder toons are converted to non-Ladder characters, so you don't lose them. However, at this point they will not be able to participate in Ladder games. You can continue to play your characters as non-Ladder characters or delete your characters and start all new Ladder toons.
Q u o t e:Wh en Blizzard resets the Ladder all Ladder toons are converted to normal characters, so you don't lose them. However, at this point they will be saved on your hard drive and lose access to Ladder content. You can then choose to play Single Player, Open Battle.Net, TCP/IP or delete your characters and start all new Ladder toons.
I don't think this happens. I've never had my converted closed realm toons saved on my hard drive after a ladder reset. If there is something I'm missing, please do inform me of how this can be done. Otherwise, I believe you misspoke on this point.|||

Ok this has been bugging me but is there any way to tell how long you have been playing your character I just started d2 and I am loving it but I just want to make sure that all my hard work does not get deleted.
If your question aims towards "total time spend on one character": there is no way a player can tell.
If your question aims towards "when will my character be permanent and save from expiring": the answer to this is "never". Every character that is not played within a 90 day period will expired.
What one can tell is if a new character has been played for less or more than 2 hours. Less than 2 hours means you see the "expires in xx days" notice. Past 2 hours the notice goes away and your character will have up to 90 days to expire, as Justin already stated. These 90 days are refreshed every time you re-login into b.net with this character. The only time the expire notice reappears is when a character was not played for 30+ days. The notice then represents a countdown of up to 60 days.

As 4thdimension already stated this is not true.
Closed b.net characters are stored server-side only as the Ladders. A Ladder reset does not move your char away from the servers; they will never be saved to your hard disk. Thus these characters will never be seen in Single Player, Open Battle.Net or TCP/IP games.
A Ladder reset only switches your Ladder characters to Non-Ladder characters. They keep all gear, exp and stats they have but past the reset they won't be able to participate in Ladder-games nor find or build Ladder-only items anymore.|||My apologies to all. I have edited my original post to reflect (hopefully) the correct information.|||Not that it would be an inherently bad idea to have a "download to single player" option.
