Basically i used to know the game pretty well in sp, i think im going to start with a fb/fo sorc, anything really change with that build since 1.11? Also how hard is it to get into the community? I hear theres lots of bots and hacks around and i guess i dont wanna just jump into random games with people droping duped items everywhere and such. Would like to find some good people to play with after i get leveled up of coarse.
Oh and should i start on the ladder?
Thanks for the help.|||Welcome! :D
Online is a much different creature than single player. One of the biggest things you'll have to worry about is trusting people. NEVER TRUST ANYONE. If they ask you to do something that seems even remotely fishy, don't do it. You should never have to drop an item on the ground, or give it to someone for any reason. If someone wants to see your gear, that's what the trade screen is for. People will go through all lengths to try and scam you, so as long you stay sharp, you should be fine.
That was a horrible way to introduce you to online, LOL. Let me just say that personally I think online is the best way to play. If you look hard enough, there are some awesome communities of people that play together. I suggest you give the Amazon Basin website a good look:

I've met tons of great people that play together through that forum. Most of them are on USEast Hardcore, so if you think you're skillful enough, you can give HC a try :) If you're set on playing Softcore, however, you might want to switch to USWest since most SC "basiners" play there.
When it comes to playing public games, yes there are bots, and there are plenty of people who cheat, but there are ways to avoid this. Firstly, keep a level requirement on any public games you make that will keep level 1 characters out, since a large majority of the bots are level 1. Also, you can change your default channel so that you don't have to worry about bots whispering messages to you. Here's a link on how to do that:

Also, I'd suggest starting on the ladder. There's no harm to it, and it will allow you access to more unique items and runewords. Keep in mind though, that when the ladder resets, your ladder character will become a non-ladder character and will no longer be able to find/create these items, and can no longer play in ladder games. That's why you might as well just make them a ladder character, since they will eventually be a non-ladder character in the future :-P
And yes, the FO/FB sorc is as useful as she's always been. No changes have been made to those skills, though a couple sorc skills have gotten some tweaking since 1.13 was released. Here's a link to the 1.13 patch notes if you're curious about what has changed:

Also, the Arreat Summit website is an invaluable index of almost everything you need to know about the game, incase you weren't aware of it :)

Hi guys, basically i used to play a lot of diablo 2 sp a few years back but i never bothered with the multiplayer because it didn't seem appealing to me. I decided to get back into diablo 2 for awhile to kill some time in anticipation for diablo 3 and i would like to give the online a go.

The other most important difference between Single Player and Online (Closed Battle.net) is that Close Battle.net allows the Pandemonium Event, or better known as, "Uber". And in Closed Battle.net, Uber Diable spawns (Diablo Clone). Those are probably the most sought after features. If you want an in-depth explanation of what Ubers and the Diablo Clone are, ask someone else.
