Sorceress' CL Synergies?

The Sorceress' Chain Lightning Skill has three synergies: Charged Bolt, Nova and Lightning. They all add 4% damage per level. Without considering prerequisites, what is the difference, if any, in putting 15 points in Charged Bolt and 20 points in Chain Lightning or putting 5 points each in Charged Bolt, Nova, Lightning and 20 points in Chain Lightning?|||All synergies add the same percentage so no difference regarding Chain Lightning overall damage.|||

Thanx, doc. I've been rethinking my Sorceress build and I didn't want to feel like I needed to spend points in Skills I wouldn't use just to boost CL.|||I'm considering the following:
    Cold                      Lightning                  Fire
Ice Bolt 5 Charged Bolt 1 Warmth 2
Ice Blast 1 Teleport 1
Frost Nova 1 Static Field 1
Glacial Spike 1 Lightning 15
Blizzard 1 Nova 1
Frozen Orb 20 Chain Lightning 20
Cold Mastery 20 Lightning Mastery 20

Oops! You're right. My bad. For some reason, when I was looking at the Skill Tree, I thought I saw that Nova was a prerequisite for Chain Lightning. Scratch Nova.
To be honest, I'm not sure I'll get around to playing this build. But, if I get bored with my Bowazon, I like to have "my ducks in a row" beforehand.
Thanks for the input and thanks for the info you posted on Yzyh's multishot thread. I'm thinking about doing a respec on my level 88 MA Bowazon and adding Strafe just to see how she does in Hell. I don't get why Cold Arrow is a prereq for GA, though. Anyway, she's up to the Rite of Passage now, but I've stopped there to do some Rune hunting so I can finish crafting her equipment.

  • 1 Frost Nova

  • 1 Glacial Spike

  • 20 Ice Blast

  • 20 Blizzard

  • Rest in cold mastery, none in fire mastery, 3k damage ice blast

    Level 28 Blizzard
    2390-2528 Blizzard Damage
    Level 22 Cold mastery (-125% cold resistance)
    Level 29 Fireball
    2625-2899 Fireball damage
    Level 11 Fire mastery with 100% to fire skills damage
    -15% enemy fire resistance
    This is without a torch, anni, or any skill charms. Only skills are coming from spirit and tal set.
    55% blocking, 920 life.

    Its called a Blizzballer, and its relatively weak...CL/FO is an awesome, versatile build.
    But as to your original question, you want to max out Lightning first among CL synergies, as you will use Lightning fairly frequently - its a far superior skill to CL for taking out single targets (ie bosses, Oblivion Knights, etc.) or whenever you have enemies all lined up (like in narrow corridors of WSK or Chaos), since it does about double the damage of CL at L20. There's no point in putting any points in CB or Nova, until you've maxed all your useful skills.
    There's no need for more than 1 pt Warmth, either (+skills will give you what you need). Likewise, there's less point in pushing Cold Mastery past L17 after +skills (-100% enemy res), since it stops giving a benefit to monsters with 0% cold res.
    The CL/Lightning tree is rather greedy for synergies, too....you need to invest about 60 points in CL and its synergies to really get a good Hell-viable skill.|||

    To max out Lightning I would need to take 5 points from something else. Where would you suggest I get these points (see post #3)?

    I never cared for Charged Bolt anyway. Obviously, I need 1 point here as it is a prerequisite for Lightning and Chain Lightning. I won't use Nova and the 1 point I show here in post #3 was a mistake. I thought it was a prereq for CL.

    Okay, so maybe I can pull 4 points from CM, making it slvl 16, and 1 point from Warmth, making it slvl 1. This would give me the 5 points I need to push Lightning to slvl 20.

    Okay, so far we've got L and CL maxed. Are you suggesting I put 10 points in CB and Nova? If so, and my math is correct, that means I would need to pull another 14 points from somewhere.
    I would be interested in seeing your Skill Point allocation for the CL/FO Sorceress, if you wouldn't mind posting it.

The information you've provided is much appreciated.|||More that 1 point in CM is a waste for pvm IMO. You're not going to be able to break cold immunities in hell anyway. For me I like this set up.
